Etsy Favorite: BerinMade

We're back today with another one of my favorite Etsy shops: BerinMade. Erin's work is absolutely beautiful and her story inspiring. I wish I had the talent to make such beauties!  Without further ado, I introduce you to Erin Hung - the mastermind behind BerinMade.

Name: Erin Hung
Age: 26
Business Name: BerinMade

When did you start your store and what inspired you to do so?
In 2011, the year after I got married, I was working in an auction house in their Post War and Contemporary Art department. Although it was a dream job for an art history graduate, something in me urged me to create. I was of an Fine Art background and missed painting desperately. So I secretly started my Etsy shop and worked on it in my spare time. It was the perfect escape for me. I started painting again, scanning my illustrations in, and putting them on notecards and greeting cards. Before long, someone had spotted my work and offered to work with me. Somehow I landed on an HGTV.com DIY page and enquiries started to pour in!

When I faced crossroads at my day job later on that year, I decided to make the leap and go into my business full time. It was a scary but exciting time. Now looking back, it has been a lot of hard work but totally worth it! It is all still its beginning stages so I'm really excited about what is to come.

Where do you find inspiration?
I love the art of calligraphy, hand-lettering, and antique letterforms, so old books and vintage illustrations are definitely a starting point. For colour and pattern I love looking at interior and fashion magazines and shop displays (hello Anthro!). At the end of the day, my soft spot is and always will be for the masters of painting: Cy Twombly, Peter Doig (although perhaps it will be a while yet for him to be considered a master!), Lucian Freud, Henri Matisse, and the like who have such a heart and soul for colour. The best part for me is somehow to pull these worlds together to work them into my own aesthetic and the look of the brand.

Gorgeous, right?! I'm thinking of ordering a bunch! I tell you, her work is truly unique. And exciting news: Erin is offering a 10% discount off all custom notes and stamps to all FT readers! Use code FashionTruffles10 and ENJOY!
