Tilly Doro Giveaway

I first saw Tilly Doro's pieces at Teich, a small boutique in the West Village, a few months ago. I fell in love with the unique pieces - delicate bracelets and colorful necklaces, all one-of-a-kind. I figured you guys would love to be introduced to this small jewelry line and would fall in love just as I did.

1. Name, Age, and Year business started: Nogah Rotstein, age: 31 (ah!), started business in 2008

2. What is your professional background and why did you start Tilly Doro?
I studied art history in college and always enjoyed drawing, painting, sewing and any creative artsy project.
I inherited a box full of old costume jewelry and decided to take some apart and redesign them into more interesting pieces. It was like making a wearable collage. I made one-of- a kind necklaces and earrings as gifts for friends and slowly put together a portfolio and started selling to boutiques.

After working as a designer for larger jewelry manufacturers for a few years I decided to finally launch my own line. I like the idea of smaller scale, unique handmade pieces. I prefer using overstock and vintage materials which have history, character and stories of their own and which are less wasteful to produce than large scale jewelry made overseas.

3. What does the name Tilly Doro mean?
Tilly Doro is named for my grandmother Tilly. She was a Holocaust survivor and always taught us to be mindful and that nothing should be wasted or taken for granted. The gifts she appreciated the most were the ones we made by hand, and this is something that has always stayed with me. Because I like to incorporate old "pre-loved" materials in my work, every piece from my one-off collection is an ode to the past.

4. Where do you find your inspiration?
I am usually inspired by the materials I work with and the found treasures that I come across in flea markets and estate sales. I imagine the story behind the locket or charm and add stones, beads, chain or fabric to bring it back to life in a new modern way. I prefer to follow my instinct rather than trends and enjoy creating something colorful and fun that feels special and timeless.
