Travel Recap: Chiang Rai

Visiting with the Akha tribe
Chiang Rai is the northernmost province in Thailand. It's actually less than an hour away from the border with Myanmar and we made a quick trip north just to cross the border and say we'd been to Burma. Pretty neat if you ask me! Chiang Rai is very small, but has some really beautiful mountains and we got to visit with some Burmese tribes that have moved to the northern mountains of Thailand. Other pretty sites are the Princess Mother's Doi Tung Royal Villa and Summer Garden (highly recommend visiting this place!), the Opium Hall, Wat Rong Khun (also known as the White Temple), and the night bazaar. I learned that Thailand is one of the biggest exporters of flowers in the world so you can imagine how amazing the summer gardens are. Chiang Rai did not disappoint with it's small town charm and beautiful mountains.

The impressive Wat Rong Khun or White Temple.
Chiang Rai Night Bazaar.
Fresh insects (to eat) at the Night Bazaar. The options were cricket, grasshopper, silk worms, bamboo worms, and scorpions.
The REAL northern Thai cuisine is unbelievable! Think fried chicken with cashews and lots of curry.
One of our favorite stops on our trip - The Princess Mother's Doi Tung Royal Villa and the unbelievable Summer Gardens.
