Valentine's Day, historically, has not been a very big holiday in our household, but I do love the meaning it holds—a day dedicated exclusively to celebrating love and friendship—and I hope to turn the holiday into a special one now that Ali is with us.
I have very special memories of my younger years, celebrating San Valentin with mi gente in Puerto Rico. One of our favorite things to do was to bake cookies—heart-shaped ones in honor of the holiday. I distinctly remember how much we loved spending the day together, laughing and prancing around the kitchen pretending to be the next Betty Crocker.
This year, I'm looking forward to celebrating the day with Kenny AND with Ali for the very first time. I hope that as she grows up we can create our very own San Valentin memories—maybe even ones that include us in the kitchen, baking sweets and celebrating the holiday I grew up to love.
In anticipation of this year's holiday, I ran out to Target to stock up on everything we would need for an afternoon of baking. I even bought Ali some cute toys so she can play as I bake—unfortunately, a six-month-old won't actually be mixing the batter or decorating cookies. How long exactly until we can have real mommy-and-me baking sessions? Until then, San Valentin cookies will be under my charge, so wish me luck!
P.S. The cookies above were baked using the Joy of Cooking Valentine's Sugar Cookie recipe found here.
